The Big Show 2021

There is a right of passage for Houston artists: sooner or later, you've got to make into to "The Big Show", the big juried exhibition at the Lawndale Arts Center.  It's one of the big annual events on the Houston art scene.  And this year, I made the cut.

I had submitted my application right before the pandemic, then nothing happened for over a year, and then surprise!  I received the email telling me that I had made the cut.  Me and 180 other people because, well... it's a really, really, big show.

I am pleased and grateful that my work was selected.  I am sorry I missed the opening though; I was in France at the time of the opening and I have needed a few weeks to get back into my Houston routine, reconnect with friends and family  and get over the monster jet-lag that gets me at either end of any trans-Atlantic travel.

The work that was selected is the large embroidered portrait of my friend Julie. The piece is very powerful.  Julie acquired it just a few months ago so I am extra grateful that she is now agreeing to lend it back for the duration of the exhibit.

If you are in Houston, make your way to the Lawndale Arts Center. The show will run through August 14, 2021.  Apart from yours truly, take a moment to look for the cut-paper art of my fellow Artist Inc. buddy, Anthony Pabillano and the lovely painting by Kay Sarver, grande-dame of the Houston Art Tribe

Enjoy.
